About the Event
We met Martha Tilston when she was in Lewes promoting her stunning film and musical project 'The Tape' and we're very pleased to have Martha headline our October Hilltop Session.
With a voice like spider-webbed hollows and lyrics that inspire and captivate, Martha has carved her niche in the English modern folk scene with sharp, original songs that dissect the modern world and established herself as a renowned artist.
Martha grew up immersed in music - her singer-songwriter father Steve Tilston and renowned folk singer step-mother Maggie Boyle were obvious influences, with their musician friends Bert Jansch, John Rebourn and John Martin often gathering and singing in the family kitchen.
With a BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards ‘Best Newcomer’ nomination and seven albums to date, Martha's own musical journey has taken her from the acoustic stage at Glastonbury to touring the far reaches of the globe. Originally one half of folk duo Mouse (alongside Nick Marshall), Martha often shared the stage with the likes of Kate Tempest and Damien Rice.
Her live performances take you from stripped down folk arrangements to textural electronica, sparkling melodies and her beautiful crystal clear vocals, often stepping off stage to sing un-accompanied amongst the audience.
‘Sharp, original songs that dissect the modern world. She captures both the harshness and enchantment of life’ The Guardian
Supporting Martha is the amazing talent that is Natsuma, a 19 year old singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist and producer who's been making music for over a decade. Natsuma writes, records and produces all her songs at home and takes inspiration from the likes of Nao, The 1975, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder and electronic music.
